PLO 5. Make use of major professional concepts and appropriate terminology. PLO 13. Know modern philological and pedagogical foundations of teaching Ukrainian language and literature, language norms, the socio-cultural development of the Ukrainian language, the use of language units in a certain context, language discourse of fiction and modernity, leading trends in the development of the literary process in Ukraine. Have communicative competence in Ukrainian (linguistic, socio-cultural, pragmatic components in accordance with the CEFR); be able to enhance own competence both in national and international contexts. Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites Successful performance in the course builds on an essential knowledge of “Introduction to linguistics”. Students are also expected to know: the general structure of modern Ukrainian; units of phonetic, lexical, morphological, and syntactical levels of Ukrainian; basic information about anatomy and physiology obtained in secondary school, to be able to: offer critical judgment of the concepts studied in the course “Introduction to linguistics”; provide phonetic analysis of units of the Ukrainian language; have elementary skills of working with textbooks; searching for necessary information in the recommended sources; analysis and comparison of language units; utilizing the acquired knowledge in writing course papers/academic essays and module test papers.
Course content
Course description The course aims to equip students with knowledge of theoretical and practical aspects of the phonetic structure of modern literary Ukrainian, its segmental and supra-segmental subsystems, and norms of Ukrainian orthoepy; develop skills to use the acquired knowledge in practice while interpreting sound changes in speech from phonological perspective. The course is composed of three parts: Segmental phonetics describes the subject matter, research methodology as well as the place of phonetics in the system of linguistic studies. Supra-segmental phonetics focuses on the study of supra-segmental units contrasting their features with the features of segmental units. Phonology analyses speech sounds from the functional perspective. The course ends with an examination.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions, additions, a progress test, a creative task, and participation in discussions. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum presented on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. It is made up of the scores for the coursework during a term (max. 60, min. 36 points) and the scores earned during the exam (max. 40, min. 24 points). The formative assessment considers answers at practical sessions, additions, creative tasks, and participation in discussions (26 points). The summative assessment is a written exam.
