PLO 10. Know the rules of standard language and be able to apply them in practice. PLO 11. Know the principles, technologies and techniques of oral and written texts of different genres and styles creation in Ukrainian, German and English. PLO 14. Use German and English in oral and written form, in different genre-stylistic varieties and registers of communication (official, unofficial, neutral), to solve communicative tasks in everyday, social, educational, professional, scientific spheres of life. PLO 15. Perform linguistic, literary and translation analysis of texts of different styles and genres. Full-time form

Knowledge of the German language at level B2 and above; proficient command of the Ukrainian language; mastery of the theoretical principles of translation.

The course consists of a general and a specific part. The general part covers the theoretical foundations of legal translation, features of legal language (the connection between law and language, and the dependence of legal terminology on the legal system), characteristics of legal language in Germany and Ukraine, as well as the role of the translator in legal communication. The specific part of the course includes an overview of the legal systems of Germany and Ukraine, familiarization with legal professions and specific areas of law (including constitutional, civil, and criminal law), working with relevant terminology, and practicing the translation of texts from these legal fields. Practical tasks in legal translation primarily aim at understanding the challenges of translating texts from different legal systems (Germany and Ukraine), identifying the reasons for these challenges, and developing skills in legal translation. The foundational material for the course includes the textbook by Prof. O.A. Shabliy (see the list of literature) and authentic texts, including laws and other legal documents from Germany and Ukraine.

Lectures, practical classes, independent work.

Current assessment includes active participation in discussions, bilingual glossary, translation project, and an oral final interview. The final assessment will be in the form of a credit. Criteria for evaluation for each form of assessment are provided in the course program.
