Learning outcomes
To have systematic knowledge about the main periods of development of the ancient Japanese literature and evolution of literary trends, literary works of leading artists and the most important phenomena in the ancient Oriental literatures; be able to analyze and interpret works of the ancient Oriental fiction, determine their specifics, place and role in the literary processes of Japan, interpret and translate ancient prose texts of various styles and genres, interpret and translate ancient poetic texts of various strophic forms and genres (norito, semmyo) as well as poetic works from "Manyo:shu:", "Kojiki" and "Nihonshoki", explain the main reasons for emergence of historical and mythological chronicles and poetry of the norito genre, justify own view and independently explain a number of debatable problems related to the principles of poetics and artistic and stylistic features of poetry in the anthology "Manyo:shu:".

Mastering of a number of specialized disciplines: "Eastern Language (Basic Level)", "Introduction to the Eastern Philology", "Translation Practice"; knowledge of the basics of literary theory, Japanese history and related philological disciplines.
Course content
The academic discipline "Oral and Ancient Japanese Literature" is a part of the comprehensive discipline "History of the Japanese Literature" (6 credits): Part 1. Oral and Ancient Japanese Literature (2 credits); Part 2. Medieval Japanese Literature (4 credits). Within the first part, which focuses on the study of the history of ancient Japanese literature (from ancient times to the end of the Nara era in 794), 2 modules are defined: M o d u l e 1 aimed at studying the Japanese literature of the pre-literate period (until the end of the VII century); M o d u l e 2 aimed at studying the Japanese literature of the Nara era (710-794). The discipline is a part of the research component of the educational program, which is presented in the focus of seminars and self-study on scientific research in the field of Japanese literature from ancient times (VII century) to the present (late twentieth century).
