The successful performance in the exam builds on students’ knowledge of modern approaches to teaching Ukrainian language and literature (ULL) based on the best Ukrainian and international practices, effective methods of teaching; methods of testing and assessing learners’ outcomes in UL; the major functions of language as a social phenomenon, features of language use in particular contexts; the state standard of secondary education, ULL curricula for secondary educational establishments and pathways of their implementation in a variety of instructional and extra-curricular activities; ability to organize ULL instruction in secondary educational establishments, study theoretical and teaching methods-related scholarly sources, search, process, systematize and apply up-to-date scientific information in practice, use computer technologies; have enhanced communicative competence in UL; be able to compare and contrast language phenomena; write and edit Ukrainian profession-oriented texts.
Course content
Course Description The examination aims to test programme learning outcomes of the courses on modern Ukrainian language, history of Ukrainian language and literature (ULL), and methods of teaching ULL in basic secondary school. The final examination integrates the issues studied within the above-mentioned courses aimed at the development of students’ communication competence in Ukrainian, as well as the capacity to solve complex profession-oriented tasks related to the organization of ULL instruction and education in secondary school. The final exam is comprised of four thematic parts: 1) Ukrainian language; 2) Ukrainian literature; 3) Methods of teaching Ukrainian language in basic secondary school; 4) Methods of teaching Ukrainian literature in basic secondary school.

Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment The format of the exam is written; the duration is 120 minutes. The examination card includes four tasks. Task 1 aims to assess students’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills in modern Ukrainian/ history of Ukrainian; Task 2 – in methods of teaching Ukrainian; Task 3 – in history of Ukrainian literature, and Task 4 – in methods of teaching Ukrainian literature. Each task is allotted 25 points. The maximal score that a student can score is 100 points and the minimal is 60 in compliance with the grading scheme. A detailed account of all criteria to assess students’ performance in the exam is presented in the course curriculum posted on the website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
