Prerequisites and performance requirements To successfully master the course content, students are expected to know foreign language pedagogy in general as well as its special branches; specifics of pedagogical discourse; a repertoire of a foreign language teacher’s strategies and tactics, methods, and techniques of teaching English in secondary school; methodology of conducting optional and special courses of English as a second language; know how to design a course of English within curricula, plans, textbooks; use methods and techniques in a variety of teaching forms implemented in educational settings; tackle psychological and psycholinguistic difficulties of learning English as a second language; predict areas of interlanguage interference; develop lesson plans and conduct classes and extra-curricular activities of English as a second language in basic secondary school; work with gifted children.
Course content
Course Description The course is elective, it belongs to the cycle of professional and practical training. The course content is based on the fundamentals of international and national foreign language pedagogy aiming to enable the building of methodological competence – knowledge and skills of planning, organization, and reflection on the process of teaching English as a second language in basic secondary school, as well as assessment and evaluation of learning outcomes. The course focuses on the study of psychological, psycholinguistic, and methodological fundamentals of teaching English as a second language, on intercultural aspects of learning English as a second language, on the paths to overcome interlanguage interference, as well as methods of assessing students’ progress in English as a second language. The course is comprised of two modules, it includes two module (mid-term) tests and an end-of-course test paper. Summative assessment is a pass/fail test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is delivered in Ukrainian. It combines such forms of delivery as lectures, practical sessions, independent work, and project work. The major activities the students are engaged in and further assessed are classroom discussion, a team/individual project, module (mid-term) test papers, and an end-of-course test. For completing the listed activities, a student can earn a maximum of 100 and a minimum of 60 points. Assessment methods and criteria
A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system, a pass/fail assessment score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 100, min. 60 points) and does not involve any additional assessment events. The end-of-course assessment score is the sum of points earned for the classroom performance (30 points), module tests (40 points), project work (10 points), and end-of-course test papers (20 points). To succeed in the pass/fail assessment, students are required to gain a passing grade of 60; students fail if the score is below 60.
