PLO 2. Process information effectively: collect relevant information from a variety of sources, including professional literature and electronic databases, critically analyse and interpret it, organize, classify and systematize it. PLO 3. Organize self-learning and self-education process. PLO 5. Collaborate with colleagues, representatives of other cultures and religions, supporters of different political views, etc. PLO 6. Use information and communication technologies to solve complex specialized tasks and issues of professional activity. PLO 7. Understand the major issues of philology and approaches to solving those using relevant methods and innovative approaches.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students should know: the history of world and Ukrainian education (within the scope of the comprehensive general secondary education program); be able to: identify, analyze, compare information of a historical and cultural nature; analyze one's own abilities, inclinations, interests; have elementary skills of processing of a scientific text, systematization of materials necessary for work, effective organization of one's own educational activities.
Course content
In this course the first-year students learn the basic principles, leading trends and stages of formation of university education in Ukraine and the world. The course provides substantial analysis and assessment of the reasons and main historical prerequisites for the emergence of universities in the world. The peculiarities of the influence of world university traditions on the formation of the Ukrainian educational system, the history of the formation of the Ukrainian university education system, the stages of creation and development of Kyiv University are discussed. The course dwells on the historical processes that influenced Kyiv University during its existence up to now. The history of formation, the main stages of development and the structure of philological science, as well as the history of philological research at Kyiv University are outlined. The specifics of philological knowledge and the profession of a philologist are characterized. Students will learn about the life, creative activity and scientific heritage of outstanding philologists, the role and place of a philologist in modern society, organization of the educational process and independent work of a philology student at the university.

Assessment methods and criteria
Students can be assigned up to 5 points for participating in the discussion, up to 15 points for preparing essays and presentations, and up to 10 points for speaking with a presentation or case project. The credit is given based on the results of the student's work throughout the entire semester and does not include additional assessment measures for successful students.
