Learning outcomes
PLO 6. To use knowledge on expressive, emotive, logical language means and speech techniques in order to achieve an intended pragmatic result and organize successful communication. PLO 8. To assess the historical legacy and new achievements of Literature Studies. PLO 11. To perform a scholarly analysis of language, speech and literature material, interpret and structure it based on appropriate methodological principles, sum up the results of individually processed data. PLO 19. To detect systemic interlingual differences and take them into account in translation practice. PLO 20. To undertake pre-translation analysis of specialized texts of various styles and genres.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Before studying this course the students should have a systemic view of modern stylistics as a discipline, its subject and aims, know basic linguistic and stylistic categories. Isolate nation-specific and universal features of national language and culture; plan and assess one’s own work; apply interactive and multimedia techniques. Possess elementary skills of stylistic analyses of texts that belong to various genres; demonstrate a critical approach to the analyzed phenomena and to the used professional information sources; interact and cooperate in studying and in research work.
Course content
The aim of the discipline lies in promoting a better knowledge of the stylistic resources and functional styles of English and Ukrainian in a comparative aspect; forming all necessary competences for professional translation activities in oral and written forms, in basic genre-style varieties and registers of communication. The course familiarizes the students with the isomorphic and allomorphic features of English-language and Ukrainian-language texts that belong to official-business, mass media, advertising, scientific and colloquial styles; represents the characteristics of English and Ukrainian stylistic norms shown through the comparison of stereotype verbal behaviour patterns in certain communicative situations; forms communicative and translation competences of the future translators; develops translation skills and abilities.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Academic activities during the semester: tasks to be fulfilled in the process of individual work; answers, additions at seminars; participation in lectures and seminars; test paper
Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment: The assessment of knowledge is effected according to the ECTS system, which presupposes a two-level assessment of the material. In particular, assessment of theoretical background – results of training (knowledge 1.1. – 1.4), which constitutes 55 % of an overall score, and assessment of practical training – results of training (skills 2.1. – 2.3.); (communication 3.1. – 3.3.); (autonomy and responsibility 4.1. – 4.3.), that constitutes 45 % of an overall score. Assessment of semester work: 1. Oral answer, addition, participation in discussions at lectures and seminars: RT 1.1. - 1.4., 2.1. - 2.3., 3.1.-3.3., 4.1.-4.3. – 18/31 credit points. 2. Test paper: RT 1.1.-1.4., 2.1.-2.4., 3.1.-3.2., 4.1.-4.3. – 10/15 scores. The students that have less scores than the critical design minimum – 36 credit points, are not allowed to pass the exam.
