Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successfully master the courses "Old Germanic languages", "General Linguistics", "History of English"; speak English at level C1 on the CEFR scale; be able to apply linguistic tools in practice and have basic skills of analysis and interpretation of the language development processes as well as linguistic analysis.
Course content
The purpose of the course is to determine the place of regional and social varieties in sociolinguistic research, acquaint with the linguistic geography of English language in terms of phonetic, grammatical etc. structures in regional varieties. The course defines the place of the variety studies in linguistics, covers historical varieties of English, processes of language contact and change, social and regional variability, major and emerging Englishes.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The methods of instruction entail lectures, practical classes, and self-study. The course is taught through such instructional activities as linguistic analysis, report-presentation, abstracting of linguistic sources, and a final test.
Assessment methods and criteria
The course ends with a final test. Students’ performance during the term is the sum of the points accumulated for their work: linguistic analyses, report-presentations, abstracting of linguistic sources, and a final test. The minimum score for the semester is 60 points, while the maximum score equals 100.
