Learning outcomes

PLO 2. To demonstrate an adequate level of mastery of national and foreign languages to perform written and spoken communication, namely in the situations of professional and academic communication; to present the results of their studies in these national and foreign languages.
PLO 10. To collect and systematize facts of language and literature, to interpret and translate texts of various styles and genres (depending on the chosen specialization).
PLO 12. To observe the rules of academic integrity.
PLO 14. To create, analyze, and edit texts of various genres and styles.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of modern translation studies, including types of translation transformations, genre-stylistic aspects of translation, peculiarities of the terminology systems in English and Ukrainian, as well as lexical proficiency in accordance with the thematic plan of the lessons.
2. Proficiency in practical skills of translation analysis, as well as written and oral (including summarizing) translation of texts of general nature.
Course content
The discipline is an integral part of the educational, scientific and professional training of highly skilled translators. It encompasses the comprehensive realization of educational, practical, developmental and professional goals as it aims to consolidate students' knowledge while also enabling practical mastery and advanced development of translation skills. The curriculum of the discipline primarily focuses on improving written English-Ukrainian translation skills for specialized texts of various genres and developing practical techniques based on a cross-cultural approach to material mastery.
Teaching and assessment are conducted in English and Ukrainian languages.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final semester grade is determined by the points earned by the student throughout the specified types and forms of learning activities and the points earned in the exam. The maximum distribution follows the algorithm: 60 points (60%) for the semester assessment and 40 points (40%) for the exam. The exam is conducted in the form of a written assignment with open-ended answers, consisting of two tasks:
1. Translation of a provided English text fragment into Ukrainian (maximum score – 25 points).
2. Translation commentary on the completed translation (maximum score – 15 points).
The grading scale is as follows:
90 – 100: Excellent
85 – 89: Good
75 – 84: Satisfactory
65 – 74: Pass
60 – 64: Conditional pass
35 – 59: Fail
