Learning outcomes
Awareness of the importance of taking into account the chiral properties of matter in the planning of experiments and interpretation of results. Mastering the practical skills of using polarizing measuring instruments, equipment, and experimental equipment. Mastering the culture of recording the received information, the ability to correctly present the results in the form of graphs, and tables.
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
The student must know basic principles and laws of mechanics, their mathematical formulation and physical content; general principles of operation and general information on the scope of application of measuring equipment; causes of errors in measurements of physical quantities, methods for assessing the accuracy of the results; general safety rules for experimental research. The student must be able to use physical and mathematical models of physical processes; methods of physical measurements and analysis of their reliability, and test the implementation of model hypotheses by optical methods, conduct applied research in molecular pharmacology and basic medicine. Independently analyze the state and prospects of modern research in the field of optics, photonics, nanophotonics, and biophotonics, understand scientifically and technically significant issues in the field of optics, photonics, has various forms of public presentation.
Course content
Chiral environments and gyrotropy in animate and inanimate nature. Optical activity as a special case of birefringence. First-order spatial dispersion and optical activity. The symmetry of gyrotropic media. Artificial gyrotropy and the Faraday effect. Optical activity at oscillating transitions. Polarimetry methods, their hardware implementation. Methods of measuring circular dichroism, their hardware implementation. Correct formulation of the optical experiment in the presence of gyrotropy of the medium.

Assessment methods and criteria
Evaluation is carried out according to the modular rating system. It consists of two modules. Forms of student assessment: - semester assessment: 1. Modular test work - 20 points. 2. Compilation of colloquia and defense of independent works - 20 points. An applicant is not admitted to the exam if he/she scored less than 24 points during the semester. - final assessment (in the form of an exam), the maximum number of points is 60.
