Learning outcomes
Programme learning outcomes: PLO 2: Master the national and foreign languages confidently enough to perform the written and spoken communication, namely in the professional and scholarly communicative situations; to present the study results in the national and foreign languages. PLO 6: To use knowledge on expressive, emotive, logical language means and speaking techniques in order to achieve the intended pragmatic result and organize successful communication. PLO 11: To perform the scholarly analysis of linguistic, discourse and literary materials, interpret and structure it considering the requisite methodological principles, formulate generalizations based on the individually studied data. PLO 14: To create, analyze and edit the texts of various styles and genres. PLO 18: To present individual study results to the scholarly community via scholarly publications or conference, round-table, workshop etc. reports.
Form of study
Prerequisites and co-requisites
The programme is aimed at students with an adequate level of training in English, Theory and Practice of Translation, Comparative Lexicology of English and Ukrainian, Comparative Stylistics of English and Ukrainian obtained during the first, second, third and fourth year of studies. The student should know: key linguistic categories; general principles of translation and interpreting; be able to: form a correct communicative-logical sentence structure; perform an adequate pre-translation source text analysis; use the target language means to render the integral genre-stylistic source text means; acquire a requisite minimum of extralinguistic knowledge on the Ukrainian and global linguoculture, genre theories and stylistic models. It implies a comprehensive study of strategies and tactics of resolving the professionally-important interlinguistic and cross-cultural tasks with an account of cognitive, linguopragmatic and sociocultural parameters.
Course content
The discipline is aimed at forming and developing the communicative-discursive competence of future translators. The attention is focused on honing the optimal use of language means to perform the spoken and written interaction under the typical translation-associated circumstances. The students continue to develop and train their skills of systematization and generalization of linguistic knowledge based on the theoretical courses and elective syllabi. The course is based on synthesis of linguistic, linguo-cognitive and spiritual development of future professionals and practitioners, knowledge of the key communicative translation research. The study is based on the individually-based and cognitive-communicative principles using authentic materials. The study comprises practical classes and individual training. At the end of the term, the students take a pass-fail test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Types of learning activities during the term:
• spoken answers during the practical classes;
• written assignments within individual training;
• individual rhetorical task (speech);
• group rhetorical task (debates, round table);
• final control test.
Assessment methods and criteria
Term evaluation:
• maximum number of points during the term – 100 points;
• spoken answers: LO1.1–1.3, 2.3–2.5, 4.2, 4.4 – 17 points;
• written assignments (individual training): LO1.1, 1.3, 2.2, 2.4.-2.5, 4.4 – 17 points;
• individual rhetorical task: LO1.1–1.3, 4.1, 4.3 – 25 points;
• group rhetorical project: LO1.3, 2.5, 3.2, 4.1, 4.4 – 16 points;
• final control test: LO1.3, 2.5, 3.2, 4.1, 4.4 – 25 points.
• The final control test comprises three written tasks: 1) theoretical item, 2) rhetorical textual analysis, 3) comparative translation analysis.
Terms of pass/fail test eligibility:
Students having obtained a sum of points, which is below the critical evaluation minimum, i.e. 60 points, are not admitted to the pass/fail test.
