Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students are expected to know the English language at the appropriate level of professional competence: not lower than C1; fundamentals of civilization and world literature, theoretical foundations of general Translation/Interpretation Studies and Comparative Linguistics. Have the skills of collecting and interpreting information about phenomena, texts and events in the world history of translation; identifying original and universal (cross-cultural) features of national translation histories in the pan-European context; applying basic concepts in the analysis of historical phenomena and processes occurring in the field of translation/interpretation; planning and evaluating one's own work; applying interactive and multimedia tools. Have the skills of working with translation study texts created at different times (from antiquity to the present); producing complex oral and written messages; interacting and cooperating in the process of training in search situations.
Course content
Purpose of the discipline: formation of holistic knowledge on the general history of translation/interpretation from the first mentions of translation to present day, the history of thoughts on translation/interpretation and translation principles from the ancient world to the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Reformation, Classicism and Enlightenment, to the period of Romanticism and up to Modern times, including the history of translation in Ukraine from Kyiv Rus to the first quarter of the XXI century inclusive; deepening professional competences in translation and interpretation, mastering general knowledge on the historiography of translation and the history of translation studies, methodology of historical research of translation studies, rendering of the concept of translation, as well as the development of translation/interpretation strategies and tactics in historical dynamics. The material of the academic course stands to ensure that students understand the continuous historical process of inter-cultural communication through translation and the formation of a methodology for translation in different historical periods. The discipline provides for a deepening of general competence in translation theory.

Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment:
1. Spoken answers, addition, participation in discussions at lectures and seminars, quizzes, ongoing tests, colloquiums: LOs 1.1-1.4, 2.1-2.4, 3.1, 3.3, 4.1-4.3, 4.5 – a maximum of 51 points (+ final test worth 25 points).
2. Writing and presentation of a (research) paper / oral and written tasks: LOs 1.5, 2.5, 3.2, 4.2, 4.4 – 24 points (10 points for a research paper, 5 points for a presentation (defending research paper), 2 points for a mini-presentation.
Final assessment is conducted in the form of a final test.
Final test in oral and written formats: PLO 1.1-1.3, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 3.1, 4.1-4.5 – 16/25 points.
Final assessment (final test paper) score is added to current semester score; therefore, the total semester score has a maximum of 100 points and a minimum of 60 points.
