Prerequisites and co-requisites
To succeed, the course requires knowledge of English at the level not lower than B2 of CEFR. In addition, students are supposed: to know the theoretical foundations of modern linguistics, its key concepts and terms; the organization of the language system, in particular the structure of the modern English language; orthographic, grammatical, lexical and stylistic norms of the literary English language; theoretical foundations of language communication; to be able to adequately listen and understand English speech, make a plan-summary, write summaries and take notes in English, read English-language scientific literature, using different types of reading (detailed, overview, search, etc.) to obtain the necessary information; to make an overview of scientific works in English; deliver reports, messages, and participate in discussions and debates in English, and to have elementary skills for searching, obtaining and exchanging information.
Course content
The discipline is part of the complex discipline “Methods of Teaching and Learning English Philology” and aims to study theory and practice of teaching English as a foreign language, considering the recent trends in the development of linguistics and linguodidactics. The discipline introduces students to the trends in the development of foreign language education in Ukraine and the world, the system of teaching a foreign language, the general principles of planning, organizing and ensuring the process of learning English as a means of intercultural communication. The discipline helps students understand the specifics of pedagogical discourse, to master a significant arsenal of modern methods, approaches and techniques for teaching English-language material and communication, as well as the latest technologies for optimizing the educational process.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The modes of the course delivery encompass lectures, practical classes and self-study, which presuppose such activities as project presentations, oral answers to the questions, and written tests. The teaching methods include explanations, illustrations, heuristics and research, as well as active methods, which help engage students in the educational process and unlock their scientific and creative potential.
Assessment methods and criteria
The form of summative assessment is an exam. The number of points for the exam is 24–40 (pass), the minimum that is added to the points for summative assessment. Students are admitted to the exam if they earn 36–60 points during formative assessment throughout the entire semester. The exam includes three tasks (see § 7 of the Syllabus).
