Learning outcomes
PLO 8. To analyze, compare and classify different directions and schools in linguistics and literary criticism. PLO 12. To carry out a scientific analysis of linguistic and literary materials, to interpret and structure them, following classical and modern methodological principles, and make generalizations based on the obtained data. PLO 18. To participate in highly specialized philological seminars, conferences, scientific circles, and discussions. PLO 20. To demonstrate knowledge of the methodological apparatus of literary studies, knowledge of theories of literary criticism and modern strategies for exploring English literature, and ability to analyze literary phenomena and processes.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
To succeed, the course requires knowledge of English at the level not lower than B2 of CEFR. In addition, students are supposed: to know the major periods of literary history and specific features of Anglophone literatures; to be able to use basic terms and notions of literary studies, and to have skills in literary analysis.
Course content
The discipline familiarizes students with major western theories of literature and methodologies for analyzing fiction, raises students’ awareness about new categories and notions connected with theories of literature, and involves reading original texts or text excerpts. The course also involves analyzing the representative works of Anglophone literatures.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The modes of the course delivery encompass lectures, seminars and self-study, which presuppose such activities as oral answers to the questions/discussions and written tests. The teaching methods include explanations, illustrations, heuristics and research, as well as active methods, which help engage students in the educational process and unlock their scientific and creative potential.
Assessment methods and criteria
The form of summative assessment is an exam. The number of points for the exam is 24–40 (pass), the minimum that is added to the points for summative assessment. Students are admitted to the exam if they earn 36–60 points during formative assessment throughout the entire semester. The exam includes three tasks (see § 7 of the Syllabus).
