Prerequisites and co-requisites
The program is designed for students who have studied the complex
discipline of History of Foreign Literature: Part 1 Introduction to Literary
Studies, Part 2 Ancient Literature, Part 3. Literature of the Middle
Ages and the Renaissance, Part 4
“History of Foreign Literature of XX century” during 1th,2th,3rd
semesters and have the appropriate level of knowledge. The student must
know: basic literary terms; principles of analysis of a literary work;
characteristic features and creativity of the main representatives of the
ancient and Western European literary tradition of previous epochs; be
able to: obtain the necessary information from literary lexicons, to the
analytical reading of literary works; keep a readers diary and glossary;
have the skills of research and work with literary studies, production of
complex oral and written communications.
Course content
The subject of the discipline includes the study of patterns of development
of the literary process of XX century, and the originality of problems and
poetic features of the respective periods: Modernism, Existentialism, The
Theatre of the Absurd, Anti-Utopia of Postmodernism, Pop literature. The
course acquaints students with the works of the most prominent
representatives of Western European and American literature, placing it in
the world literary and cultural context. The discipline contributes to the
learning of a set of concepts related to the history of foreign literature of
the XX century (main movements, genres, styles, ideological and artistic
concepts, aesthetic programs), as well as the acquisition of skills of
modern textual analysis, taking into account the peculiarities of the
historical and cultural context. Training is conducted in the form of
lectures and seminars and independent work of students. Form of final
semester control - exam.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Educational activities: answer at seminars, writing a terminological
dictionary, preparation of a scientific abstract, creative presentation,
writing a synopsis of literary-critical sources, final test
Teaching methods: lecture, presentation, seminar, independent work,
discussion
Assessment methods and criteria
The final grade for the course is formed as overall points of the formative
and summative assessment.
Formative assessment is represented by answers at seminars (max 35 /
min 21 points), keeping a readers diary (max 10 / min 6 points) and
writing creative work (max 10 / min 6 points). In total, the formative
evaluation constitutes max 60 / min 36 points.
Summative assessment is conducted by means of an exam, scoring max
40 / m 21 points.
To be admitted to the exam a student must score a minimum of 36 points.
To receive a positive grade for the discipline, the score for the exam shall
be at least 24 points.
