Learning outcomes
1. To have the skills of critical thinking, to present one's own thoughts in an understandable way, to carry out their arguments. 2. To analyze, comment and summarize scientific and analytical texts of culturological format. 4.To know and understand theoretical approaches to definition of culture, its manifestations and forms of existence. 5.To collect, organize and analyze information on cultural phenomena, events, historical and cultural processes. 7. To understand the factors of cultural dynamics, the principles of periodization of cultural processes, their specific features and characteristics

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Before studying this course, students must know the main stages and characteristics of the historical and cultural process; the main achievements of material and spiritual culture; the history of the formation and development of art, the peculiarities of functioning in the cultural system of a certain historical era. 2. Be able to collect and interpret information about cultural’s phenomena, cultural processes and events; apply the main terms, categories and classifications of cultural studies in the analysis of socio-cultural phenomena and processes; explain the essence of the phenomenon of culture, its role in human life. 3. Have basic skills of scientific research and information management; critical attitude and forecasting regarding cultural events and phenomena.
Course content
The phenomenon of "mass culture". The сharacteristic features and functions of mass culture. Correlation of mass, elite, popular and folk cultures. Practical dimensions of mass culture. Mass art. Mass culture as the culture of mass society. Mass culture as an object of research of the Frankfurt School. Structural and semiotic analysis of mass culture. Poststructuralism. Feminist theory of mass culture. Mass culture in the discourse of postmodernism. Culture of consumption in the era of information (post-industrial) society. Mass culture in Ukraine.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral presentation, additions and participation in discussions at seminars: 18 / 30 points 2. Self-study №1: 3 / 6 points 3. Self-study №2: 11 / 18 points 4. Test work: 4 / 6 points 5. Written exam: 24 / 40 points Final assessment in the form of exam: the final number of points in the course (maximum 100 points) is determined as the sum of points for systematic work during the semester and the exam. Examination assessment is in writing. The examination ticket consists of 2 questions, each of which is evaluated on a scale of 20 points, which gives a total of 40 points for the exam.
