Learning outcomes
1.1. To know the results of modern sociological research on key social problems of European societies. 1.2. To know the system of basic sociological indicators for the study of quality of life and social models of Europe. 2.1. To be able to identify, analyze and interpret current social problems of society. 2.2. To be able to analyze and evaluate the necessary information in the scientific literature, data banks and other sources. 2.3. To review scientific sources in English, to ground the position, to draw independent conclusions. 3.1. To demonstrate skills of reasoned presentation of opinion, competent and tolerant discussion with opponents. 4.1. To demonstrate skills of independent research work, mastering new knowledge.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. To know the basic methods of sociological data analysis. 2. To be able to work with statistics. 3. To have skills of search and select relevant information, critical analysis, comparison of different positions.
Course content
1. What is Europe? Features of defining the borders of Europe for comparative studies and explanations of modern processes. 2. Comparative studies of European societies: projects, monitoring and results. 3. Comparative sociological analysis of social processes in European societies: typology of societies. 4. Comparative studies of social development indicators in European societies. 5. Social quality of Europe: a comparison of Western European countries. 6. The social model of Europe: Nordic countries experience in solving social problems (Norway, Denmark, Sweden). 7. Social challenges of the crisis society of Southern Europe (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece). 8. Central and Eastern Europe: Challenges of Post-Communist Transformation. 9. From the Soviet to the European Union: social processes in the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania). 10. Comparative studies of social indicators in European countries of the post-USSR (Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova).

Assessment methods and criteria
1. Individual and group work based on the analysis of the read materials: LR 1.1, 1.2, 3.1 - max 45 / min 27 points. 2. Control work: LR 1.1, 1.2, 2.1 - max 20 / min 12 points. 3. Analytical paper: LR 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 4.1 - max 20 / min 12 points. 4. Presentation and discussion on analytical paper: LR 3.1, 4.1 - max 15 / min 9 points. Final evaluation: pass-exam.
