Learning outcomes
PLO 2. To demonstrate an adequate level of mastery of national and foreign languages to perform written and spoken communication, namely in the situations of professional and academic communication; to present the results of their studies in these national and foreign languages. PLO 3. To apply modern methods and techniques, namely informational, in order to perform successful and effective professional activity and guarantee the quality of research in a specific field of Translation Studies. PLO 10. To collect and systematize facts of language and literature, to interpret and translate texts of various styles and genres (depending on the chosen specialization). PLO 11; PLO 14. Prerequisites and co-requisites
The program is designed for first-year students at the Master's level who have successfully completed the Bachelor's program and obtained the corresponding degree. They are expected to have knowledge of basic translation categories and general principles of written and oral translation. They should be capable of applying fundamental translation techniques appropriately. Additionally, they should have a proficiency level in English of at least C1 and in Ukrainian of at least C2.
Course content
The academic discipline "Translation Techniques (English Language)" is a compulsory multi-semester course in the educational program "Specialized Translation from German and English; Intercultural Management." Along with other mandatory disciplines in the educational program, the course aims to develop and enhance the fundamental competencies of a translator necessary for professional translation activities in written and oral texts. It prepares students for professional translation work with texts of various functional styles (academic, journalistic, official-business, conversational) and their main subgenres. The course prepares students for professional-level translation activities in the English-Ukrainian language pair. The course sessions aim to deepen translation skills, taking into account lexical, grammatical, genre, and stylistic peculiarities inherent in different fields and spheres. Practical training is provided through working with texts that cover essential elements of international politics, socio-political and economic activities, and represent academic, popular science, and scientific-technical styles. The texts also belong to the fields of art studies, literary studies, and include a country-specific aspect, allowing for a deeper understanding of the state, political, and legal systems of Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union in the context of translation.
