Learning outcomes
PLO 2. To demonstrate an adequate level of mastery of foreign language to perform written and spoken communication, namely in the situations of professional and academic communication; to present the results of their studies in this foreign language.
PLO 7. To analyze, compare and classify different trends and schools in Translation Studies.
PLO 8. To assess the historical legacy and new achievements of Translation Studies.
PLO 9. To characterize theoretical principles (concepts, categories, principles, basic concepts, etc.) and applied aspects of the chosen specialization in Translation Studies.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Knowledge of the fundamentals of linguistics and translation studies, proficiency in written and oral translation skills, and German language proficiency at a level not lower than C1.1.
Course content
The course "General Translation Theory," which includes lectures and practical sessions, is an essential component of the training cycle for modern translators and cultural mediators. Its aim is to familiarize students with the key theories in the field of translation studies and their application in practical professional and research activities. The discipline complements and deepens the translation and translation studies competencies acquired by students at the bachelor's level, providing a broad perspective on the phenomenon of translation: from translation stages and procedures to the social roles in the translation field and possible manipulative functions of translations. The focus on primary sources enables students to work with foreign-language scientific texts and develop critical understanding of research works. Each theory is tested through the analysis of practical material, which can serve as a basis for preparing master's and/or other research papers in the field of translation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course includes lectures, practical sessions, working with primary sources, discussions, oral presentations (essays), presentations and testing.
Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment (maximum 60 points):
Tests (module tests) - 2 tests, 10 points each = 20 points
Presentation - 2 presentations, 10 points each = 20 points
Participation in oral questioning during lectures and practical sessions, homework assignments, participation in discussions - 20 points
Maximum score for continuous assessment - 60 points
Minimum score for continuous assessment - 36 points
The final assessment is conducted in the form of an exam (maximum 40 points, minimum 24 points), where all the anticipated learning outcomes are evaluated.
The exam consists of a written assignment with open-ended questions on theoretical and practical topics (maximum 20 points), and an oral component - answering 1 theoretical question (maximum 20 points).
