Learning outcomes
Achievement by students of such competencies as:
- effectively use the learned material in written and oral communication;
- draw up and present the results of their own research in presentations; work with professional publications and media resources in English in order to obtain professionally relevant information and its further use;
- provide definitions of terms in the area of intellectual property and master their specifics;
to achieve semantic equivalence in the transfer of professional information from English into Ukrainian and vice versa (translation).
Form of study
Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Know the rules of English synthesis, language forms and grammatical constructions necessary for understanding and speaking in the legal field; general features of English-language legal systems; compositional elements of legal correspondence in a foreign language;
2. Be able to work with professional literary English to obtain professionally relevant information and its further use; define various concepts and branches of law using the appropriate terminology; determine the basic characteristics of legal documents; to effectively convey one's own point of view, to take action to defend one's position by providing a reasoned answer; to take part in discussions / debates by means of a foreign language;
3. Have skills (monologue and dialogic speech) and listening, aimed at expression and understanding, depending on the communicative intentions and situation; be responsible for the preparation of tasks of different types; be able to work independently in preparing tasks"
Course content
The proposed course is designed to acquaint masters in the "Intellectual Property" area of law with the formation of practical skills that will be needed by future lawyers, regardless of their chosen specialization. According to the results of the course, masters will be able to:
- logically and reasonably formulate their position in the professional discussion in the field of law "Intellectual Property";
- master the techniques of business and legal writing;
- to improve the techniques of design and presentation;
- use grammatical structures specific for academic style.

Practical classes with the use of video, audio and other digital materials and simulations of the legal language environment
Assessment methods and criteria
Forms of assessment vary depending on the objectives and the aim of each topic. The selection of the types of a mid-term assessment is to the discretion of the teacher who is conducting practical classes; they enclose: an individual task report, a written task, a presentation or an individual project, a mid-term test, a final test. The teacher gives a certain amount of points earned through mid-term assessment, which gets fixed in the register of an academic progress. If students miss the class for valid reason, they can made it up in free from classes time (during teacher’s scheduled consultation hours) by participation in a discussion, performance of a writing task or by other forms of assessment. It is not allowed to make up the missed classes starting from 5 days prior examination period.
