Course content
The discipline “Macromolecules of Bioorganic Nature (Part 3)” studies the role of carbohydrates in the structure of intracellular biopolymers. The third part of the discipline “Macromolecules of Bioorganic Nature” examines the main classes of carbohydrates, glycans, sialic acids, hyaluronates and carbohydrate-bound molecules. The structure of the main classes of the above-mentioned molecules is described, the main metabolic processes associated with glycans and carbohydrate-bound molecules, as well as their derivatives, are characterized, and the mechanisms of the development of pathologies resulting from impaired synthesis or degradation are considered. This discipline highlights the methods of diagnosing these diseases, protocols for their diagnosis and treatment. Demonstrates an analysis of modern challenges in science aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of congenital glycosylation diseases. Already available drugs, such as heparin, erythropoietin, and some anti-influenza drugs, have proven effective, leading to the consideration of glycans as a new class of drugs. In addition, scientists busy searching for new drugs to fight cancer believe that glycobiology opens up new possibilities for them. Anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-infective drugs with novel mechanisms of action are currently in clinical trials. They may improve or complement existing therapeutic approaches.
