Learning outcomes
Know: the basic concepts and terminology of theoretical petrophysics; the classification of methods and the parameters they measure; the stages of practical research for determining the reservoir characteristics of rocks; the principles of processing and geological interpretation of petrophysical data. Be able to: measure, process, and describe the results of petrophysical observations and explain their relationship to geological features; apply the physical parameters of rocks to analyze natural processes and geological composition; organize a comprehensive set of petrophysical studies to effectively solve a given problem.
Form of study
Distance form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of geophysical methods.
2. Basic computer skills.
3. Skills in mathematical statistics.
Course content
A study of the physical properties of rocks and methods for determining them for oil and gas exploration. The petrophysical parameters of the following physical groups are examined: density, permeability and reservoir capacity, acoustic, and electrical. The relationships between the physical and geological characteristics of rocks are explained using real-world examples. The areas of application of reservoir petrophysics are characterized by interpretation results. The discussion includes methods for the comprehensive processing of petrophysical data for oil and gas exploration.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures, practical sessions, and independent study by students.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment is conducted using a modular-rating system and includes: the completion of two practical assignments (in which students must demonstrate the quality of their acquired knowledge and solve assigned problems using the methods and tools specified by the instructor) and two written exams. The final assessment takes the form of an oral exam.
