Course content
The academic discipline "Structure and Metabolism of Lipids" introduces students to the modern principles of the structure, classification, physicochemical properties and biological functions of lipids. Special attention is paid to the unique characteristics of lipids, which make them the main structural elements of all cell membranes. The concepts of the energy and signaling functions of individual lipids, the involvement of lipids in the functioning of regulatory systems of the cell, the prospects for the use of lipids in pharmaceuticals and various industries are also provided. The discipline presents modern ideas about the peculiarities of lipid metabolic processes in normal and pathological conditions, in particular, the phenomena of free radical transformations of their molecules, the peculiarities of transport and their participation in the development of pathological conditions; a review of lipid metabolic processes in prokaryotes and plants is given.
