Learning outcomes
PLO 1. Communicate fluently on professional matters with specialists and non-specialists in the state and foreign languages, both orally and in writing, and use these languages to facilitate effective intercultural communication.
PLO 9. Characterize dialectal and social varieties of French and English and describe the sociolinguistic situation.
PLO 11. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles, techniques, and strategies for producing oral and written texts of various genres and styles in the state and foreign languages.
PLO 12. Analyze linguistic units, identify their interactions, and characterize the linguistic phenomena and processes that shape them.
PLO 14. Use French and English effectively in oral and written communication across different genres, styles, and registers (formal, informal, neutral) to address communicative tasks in everyday, social, academic, professional, and scientific contexts.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
The course is designed for students who have studied English at secondary school and during the first semester and who possess an appropriate level of preparation.
Students are expected to have the following knowledge:
- basic linguistic terminology;
- principles of linguistic analysis;
- key features of the semantics and functioning of language units at all levels of English.
Students should be able to:
- communicate in English at the B1 level;
- apply linguistic tools in practice.
Students are also expected to demonstrate basic skills in:
- selecting, analyzing, and interpreting linguistic data;
- communicating on linguistic topics.
Course content
The aim of the course is to train highly qualified philologists and English language teachers for higher and secondary education, with a strong focus on developing linguistic and methodological competences. The course is designed to broaden students’ intellectual horizons and enhance their theoretical and methodological training. Particular attention is given to lexical, grammatical, and stylistic analysis of texts, as well as to the systematization and consolidation of linguistic knowledge. The course explores the interrelation of language levels, stylistic and semantic features of syntax, and issues of textual coherence. Instruction is based on a communicative approach, incorporating authentic materials and the simulation of real-life communicative situations. The course is delivered through practical classes and supported by independent student work.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Learning activities throughout the semester include:
- independent and creative tasks completed as part of self-study;
- midterm assessment in the form of written tests covering four components of language competence;
- active participation and performance in practical classes.
Assessment methods and criteria
Continuous (semester) assessment:
Maximum: 60 points
Independent and creative tasks (LO 1.1–1.3, 2.1–2.3, 3, 4): 20 points
Midterm assessment (written tests covering four components of language competence; LO 1.1–1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 4): 30 points
Class participation and performance (LO 1.1–4): 10 points
Final assessment (exam):
Maximum: 40 points
Assesses LO 1.1–4
Structure:
Written component: (1) dictation; (2) grammar test; (3) vocabulary test
Oral component: (1) linguistic text analysis; (2) theoretical grammar question; (3) oral topic
Admission requirement:
Students who score below the minimum threshold of 36 points during the semester are not admitted to the exam.
