Learning outcomes
PLO 8. To know and to understand the system of ancient Greek, Latin and foreign languages, the general properties of literature as an art of words, the history of ancient Greek and Latin languages and literature, to be able to apply the knowledge in professional activities. PLO 9. To characterize dialectal and social varieties of classical and foreign languages, to describe the sociolinguistic situation. PLO 10. To know the norms of the literary language and to be able to apply it in practical activities. PLO 11. To know the principles, technologies and methods of creating spoken and written texts of various genres and styles in national, classical and foreign languages. PLO 14. To use a foreign language in spoken and written form, in various genre-stylistic varieties and registers of communication (official, unofficial, neutral), to solve communicative tasks in everyday, social, educational, professional, scientific spheres of life.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful completion of the course requires knowledge of general linguistic terminology and terminological systems, mastery of the fundamentals of modern English grammar, and proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking at the levels prescribed by the first and second-year curricula.
Course content
The academic discipline "Theory of the English Language" is a key component of the comprehensive training for specialists at the Bachelor’s degree level. The course defines the position of theoretical grammar among other linguistic disciplines and highlights the morphological and syntactic features of the English language. The study of theoretical grammar deepens, generalizes, and systematizes students' knowledge, providing a solid foundation for conducting independent linguistic research.

Assessment methods and criteria
The final form of assessment in the 6th semester is an Exam. To be eligible for the exam, students must complete two mandatory control works as prescribed by the course curriculum. Students must accumulate a total score of no less than the minimum required threshold of 36 points to be admitted to the exam. For students who have not reached the minimum threshold (36 points) during the semester, a final semester control work is administered, and research papers (essays) on the course topics are evaluated. The exam assesses the following learning outcomes: LO 1.1, LO 2.1; LO 3.1; LO 4.1. The exam is graded out of 40 points and includes: - a final written test – 20 points; - oral responses to two theoretical questions based on lecture topics – 10 points per question.
