Learning outcomes
PRN 2. Work effectively with information on Slavic studies: select the necessary information from various sources, including specialist literature and electronic databases; critically analyse and interpret it; organise, classify and systematise it.

PRN7. Understand the main issues in philology and Slavic philology, and approaches to resolving them using appropriate methods and innovative approaches.
PRN16. Know and understand the main concepts, theories and concepts of Belarusian and Ukrainian linguistics and literary studies (including translation), and be able to apply them in professional practice.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1) knowledge of general information about language, its nature, functions and levels;
2) mastery of basic skills in analysing language at all levels of its structure in accordance with
secondary school curricula (analysis of grammatical forms and syntactic constructions,
etymological and word-formation analysis, translation, analysis and interpretation of sentences and texts).
Course content
The course ‘Latin language’ introduces students to the basics of phonetics, morphology, word formation and syntax in Latin, the principles of derivation and borrowing from Latin into modern languages, and the legacy of Latin maxims and set phrases. Its subject matter is the study of the patterns of development of the Latin language and its influence on modern European languages. The course provides an overview of the lexical composition and grammar, word-formation patterns and the semantics of affixes in the Latin language, as well as the Latin component in specialist philological terminology; it develops skills in reading, translating and annotating Latin texts with a dictionary, as well as in the etymological and word-formation analysis of Latin derivatives.

Assessment methods and criteria
The total marks for the semester are made up of the marks obtained by the student whilst studying the course material. The overall mark for the semester comprises marks awarded for classroom work (which combines oral responses, contributions and participation in discussions, a test, and independent work (creative assignments): oral responses, contributions and participation in discussions, a test, and independent work (creative assignments: essays, research work on Latin derivations). In the event of absence from a practical session, the student must complete the practical session assignment. Final assessment: pass/fail. The pass/fail mark is awarded based on the student’s performance throughout the semester and does not involve any additional assessment procedures. Therefore, the final mark for the course (minimum 60, maximum 100 marks) consists of the sum of the marks for semester work (minimum 48, maximum 80 marks) and the final assessment (min. 12, max. 20 marks).
