PRN2. Work effectively with information on Slavic studies: select the necessary information from various sources, including specialist literature and electronic databases; critically analyse and interpret it; organise, classify and systematise it. PRN5. Collaborate with colleagues, representatives of other cultures and religions, and those with different political views, etc. PRN7. Understand the main issues in philology and Slavic philology, and approaches to resolving them using appropriate methods and innovative approaches. PRN16. Know and understand the main concepts, theories and concepts of Belarusian and Ukrainian linguistics and literary studies (including translation), and be able to apply them in professional practice.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites for studying or selecting this subject: Possess basic skills in the analysis and interpretation of language at all levels of its structure in accordance with secondary school curricula – phonetic, morphological, lexical, phraseological, syntactic and stylistic - taking into account the view of language as the most important means of human communication, an indispensable feature of an ethnic group and a nation.
Course content
The course ‘Introduction to Linguistics’ is designed to familiarise students with the fundamentals of general linguistics, the key principles of linguistic theory, and the most important methods and techniques for studying such a multifaceted phenomenon as language. The course is fundamentally based on research principles, general linguistic and language teaching beliefs and priorities that have been developed at the Department of General Linguistics, Classical Philology and Neo-Hellenic Studies at the Institute of Philology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, through many years of teaching general linguistic disciplines, whilst also taking into account in its socio-linguistic linguistic component, the significant socio-ideological changes that have taken place in recent years in Ukraine as a democratic state. The course comprises 2 credits (16 hours of lectures and 14 hours of practical sessions). The course concludes with an examination.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures and practical sessions, individual consultations, supervision of students’ independent work and monitoring of its completion, exam.
Assessment methods and criteria
Ongoing assessment of students and checking of term assignments takes place during practical sessions throughout the semester. A test is held at the end of each of the two content modules. The overall mark for the semester is composed of marks obtained for classroom work (which combines independent work): oral responses, a report analysing academic literature, completion of written assignments, etc. All types of work for the semester are worth a maximum of 60 marks and a minimum of 36 marks. The final assessment takes the form of an examination. The final semester mark is composed of the marks obtained by the student during the completion of the specified types and forms of assessment, and the marks obtained in the examination; the maximum distribution is carried out according to the following algorithm: 60 marks (60%) – semester assessment and 40 marks (40%).
