Learning outcomes
Know the main parameters belonging to the group of density, capacitance, thermophysical, elastic, electrical, magnetic and radioactive properties, and the features of their measurement in geological objects. Know the dependence of parameters on the composition and conditions of formation of minerals and rocks. Know the basic principles of constructing statistical and genetic petrophysical classifications, and the features of their application in paleogeodynamic analysis and metallogenic assessment of intrusive rocks. Be able to choose a rational set of petrophysical parameters to obtain independent information on the composition, structural and textural features and conditions of formation of rocks and geological objects when conducting survey, exploration and methodological work. Be able to determine the structures and textures of tectonites, deformation mechanisms.
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
The student must have basic knowledge of physics, mineralogy, petrography, lithology, crystal optics, possess the methods of macroscopic and microscopic research of mineral matter.
Course content
The discipline studies density, capacitance, elastic, thermal, magnetic, electrical and radioactive properties of chemical elements, minerals, igneous, metamorphic, hydrothermal, metasomatic and sedimentary rocks. Issues of dependence of physical properties on composition, structural and textural features and conditions of formation and transformation of minerals, rocks and ores are considered. The advantages and disadvantages of "statistical" and "genetic" approaches to the construction of petrophysical classifications of rocks are analyzed. Deformation mechanisms, nomenclature, characteristic structures and textures of tectonites and their dependence on thermobaric conditions are studied. The goal of the discipline is to acquaint students with the scientific principles of petrophysical research methods, with the peculiarities of the application of physical properties in geological-structural and geochemical research, as well as with the basic principles of microstructural analysis.
Recommended or required reading and other learning resources/tools
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures, laboratory works, consultations, independent work of the student
Assessment methods and criteria
Semester evaluation (maximum possible / minimum permissible number of points): 1. Test paper No. 1 (1st semester) – 20/10 points. 2. Test paper No. 2: (2nd semester) – 40/20 points. Final assessment: Written exam (questions with open answers) The maximum score is 40 points. To receive an overall positive grade in the discipline, the grade for the exam cannot be less than 24 points. Conditions for admission to the final exam: a student is not admitted to the exam if during the semester he scored less than 20 points, or did not participate in laboratory classes, or did not complete at least one of the control papers. Evaluation organization: Control paper No. 1 is conducted at the end of the first semester, and control paper No. 2 - in the penultimate week of the second semester. The class (consultation) in the last week of the semester is aimed, among other things, at providing feedback to students regarding the formation of study results by discipline.
