Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
- Subject, purpose, objectives, research methods and areas of use of rocks;
- Modern ideas about the origin of different types of rocks and the processes of their formation;
- Features of the distribution and conditions of occurrence of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks;
- The main features of the material composition and structure of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks;
- Principles of modern classification and nomenclature of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Skills:
- Identify igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in samples by external signs;
- Identify rock-forming minerals of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks by external signs;
- Make macroscopic descriptions of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful completion of the course "Fundamentals of mineralogy and crystallography". Mastering the skills of macroscopic diagnostics of minerals by external signs
Course content
The academic discipline "Fundamentals of Petrology" provides students with theoretical knowledge about rocks as mineral aggregates and geological bodies, their mineral and chemical composition, the main rock-forming minerals, structural and textural features, geological conditions of occurrence and origin. At the same time, ideas about modern methods of studying rocks, existing principles of their classification and nomenclature, and areas of use are formed. Laboratory work allows students to consolidate theoretical material in practice, mastering the skills of macroscopic diagnostics and description of rocks of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic origin.
Recommended or required reading and other learning resources/tools
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures, laboratory, consultations, independent student work.
Assessment methods and criteria
Evaluation is carried out according to the cumulative system. The final grade is calculated as a simple sum that includes: the points for the laboratory work, the points for the two modular tests and the points the student received in the exam. Final evaluation in the form of a written exam.
