Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Students should know: Ukrainian language at a level sufficient to read unadapted literary texts and critical literature; be aware of the specifics of the artistic style of the Ukrainian language. 2. Students should be able to: work with texts in Ukrainian: read, understand the meaning, analyze the structure, use dictionaries and other reference books to clarify the incomprehensible.
Course content
The aim of the course is to develop in international students an understanding of current issues in Ukrainian literature and folklore; to familiarize them with the historical and cultural conditions of the development of Ukrainian literature, its periodization and specific features; to examine key figures of Ukrainian belles-lettres and their creative works; and to develop students’ skills in literary analysis. The course “Topical Issues in the History of Ukrainian Literature and Folklore” is compulsory and forms part of the research component of the educational program. It is designed to provide students with a clear understanding of the Ukrainian literary process, to introduce them to Ukrainian folklore and prominent figures of Ukrainian literature, and to examine their major literary works. The course includes lectures and seminar classes focused on the thoughtful reading of literary texts, their discussion, and written assignments based on the works studied. It will also contribute to the development of international students’ communicative skills.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Forms of study: lectures, seminar classes, independent work. Teaching methods: explanation of new material, heuristic conversation, collective analysis of a literary text (semantic, psychoanalytic, intertextual), independent work with scientific literature and texts of fiction.
