Learning Outcome 2. Students must successfully complete the following courses: “Introduction to Linguistics,” “Introduction to Translation Studies,” “Main Foreign Language,” “Practical Translation from Portuguese” (second-year level), “Comparative Lexicology of Portuguese and Ukrainian” and be familiar with: basic linguistic concepts; principles of linguistic analysis; features of the grammatical structure of Ukrainian and Portuguese; the structure and functioning of linguistic units at all levels of the Portuguese language; and the fundamentals of communication theory. Be able to apply linguistic tools in practice; possess basic skills in applying linguistic methods of analysis and research; selection, analysis, and interpretation of linguistic data; and communication on linguistic topics.

The aim of the course is to identify similarities and differences in the grammatical systems of the Portuguese and Ukrainian languages in order to prevent cross-linguistic interference and overcome cross-linguistic asymmetry. The course consists of theoretical and practical components. The lecture component of the course covers topics such as parts of speech and their basic grammatical categories, tense, verb aspect, passive and active voice, mood, expressions of modality, the concepts of syntagma and sentence, and types of simple and complex sentences. Upon completion of the lecture course, students take a module exam. Seminar sessions are devoted to reinforcing theoretical knowledge and its practical application during grammatical analysis. Upon completion of the course, students take an oral and written exam, which includes two theoretical questions and a practical task analyzing grammatical phenomena characteristic of the Portuguese and Ukrainian languages.

Lectures, practical classes, presentations, papers, individual work.

The material covered in lectures on the relevant topics is reinforced during practical sessions; mastery of this material is assessed during practical sessions in accordance with the provisions of Section 7.1 of the Course Syllabus. The course syllabus requires the completion of two modules. The course concludes with an exam. The final grade is determined by the points earned by the student during the completion of the specified types and forms of instruction and on the exam. The maximum distribution is as follows: 60 points – during the semester and 40 points (20%) – exam. If a student scores fewer than 24 points on the exam, those points are not added to the semester grade regardless of the number of points earned during the semester, and the exam record will show only the number of points earned during the semester in the “final grade for the course” column.
