Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students should know:
- the basics of morphology and syntax in French and Ukrainian,
- key linguistic terminology for analyzing grammatical phenomena, as well as the principles of such analysis,
- major grammatical theories,
- the periods and processes of the development of the French grammatical system.
Students must be able to:
- communicate correctly in a foreign language, adhering to phonetic, lexical-syntactic, and grammatical norms,
- perform grammatical analysis of texts based on knowledge gained in practical and theoretical courses,
- apply linguistic tools in practice, and possess: basic skills in critically analyzing the phenomena under study, using foreign-language professional sources, and summarizing them.
Course content
Course Objectives. This course is a required component of the comprehensive, multi-semester course “Comparative Studies” and aims to examine the grammatical system of the French language in comparison with the student’s native language in order to identify similarities and differences; Students are expected to master the basic categories and methods of comparative grammar and be able to apply them in translation practice.
The course curriculum consists of two content modules: the first module, “Fundamentals of Comparative-Typological Language Study,” is designed to familiarize students with the tasks and key aspects of comparative language study in terms of comparative typology and comparative grammar, as well as to introduce the basic concepts of theoretical grammar; the second module, “Aspects of the Comparative Study of French and Ukrainian: Morphology and Syntax,” focuses on the comparative analysis of primarily nouns, verbs, and other parts of speech, as well as on the analysis of phrase structure, simple and complex sentences from a comparative perspective.
Classes include lectures and practical sessions; the course concludes with an exam.

Assessment methods and criteria
The maximum number of points for the semester is 100.
Specifically, semester assessment is based on the following forms of evaluation:
- oral responses, pop quizzes – max. 5 points;
- participation in discussions, contributions – 3 points;
- preparation and defense of a presentation or term paper – 3–5 points;
- completion of exercises – max. 3 points;
- tests, midterm assessment – 10–15 points;
- module exam – 15–20 points.
Final assessment – written and oral exam: maximum – 40 points.
