Prerequisites and co-requisites
Requirements include a foundational knowledge of the history and theory of classical rhetoric, classical literature, and the history of Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as proficiency in Ancient Greek and Latin. Students are also expected to be familiar with contemporary communication-oriented linguistic methods.
Course content
The objective of the course is to provide students with a systemic understanding of the forms, types, and models of social communication, as well as the technologies of mass audience influence implemented in classical works and modern media. The concept of the course is based on the idea of reimagining classical experience through the lens of modern mechanisms for transforming mass consciousness. Consequently, the frameworks of modern theory—ranging from spin and image-making technologies to propaganda and information warfare - allow for the assimilation of mass communication experiences described in Ancient Greek and Roman historical and literary sources into the field of contemporary social technologies. In turn, the models and methods outlined in the treatises of Gorgias, Isocrates, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian can be effectively integrated into today's communication theory.
