Course content
The purpose of the course is to highlight the role of social and cultural forces in the formation of the disciplinary field of rhetorics, to provide a preliminary understanding of its genre varieties, as well as an acquaintance with outstanding representatives of eloquence in Ancient Greece and Rome. Students will be introduced to the concept: ἡ ῥητορικὴ τέχνη – what it means, its historical development and connections with related fields of knowledge, types and subdivisions of rhetoric, the goals and tasks of its scientific study, the traits of rhetorical activity inherent in Ancient culture in general and in certain genres in particular. To understand the nature of public speaking and specific rhetorical theories, awareness of the cultural context is needed. Therefore significant attention is given to the different worldviews of Ancient Greece and Rome, particularly their social and educational environments. This approach promotes a fuller comprehending of how rhetoric functioned and evolved in different periods of the Ancient era and beyond.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral responses are graded as follows: 4 points for full mastery; 3 for sufficient knowledge; 2 for superficial answers; 1 for fragmented knowledge and gadget use. Discussion participation earns 0.5–2 points. The literature analysis (max 30) and control work (max 40) are based on the depth of interpretation: scores below 60% of the maximum indicate a lack of independence and mistakes. The final grade synthesizes in-class performance (responses, tests, project defenses) and independent study. To pass, students must earn at least 60 of 100 points. The course covers theoretical rhetoric and Sophist figures. Credits are awarded based on semester performance without additional measures, provided presentations are defended by the final lecture week. Students scoring below 60 must settle debts by completing control works and projects. The final grade is based on systematic work throughout the entire course.
