To introduce the students in the chemical structure, properties and biological functions of carboxylic acids, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, heterocyclic compounds and nucleic acids, as well as vitamins and hormones; acquaint them with the role of enzymes in the functioning of cells and tissues, with the main metabolic pathways that are implemented in cells, and the mechanisms for their regulation, as well as the basics of bioenergetics. Particular attention is paid to the study of biochemical mechanisms of physiological functions, as well as biochemistry of biological fluids (blood, urine, etc.).The final aim is the obtaining of knowledge about biochemical properties and metabolic pathways of common macromolecules in both normal and pathological conditions, as well as the ability to carry out biochemical researches of biological liquids and evaluate obtained results with interpretation of clinical and diagnostic meaning.

            Course content

The study of the biomolecules and cell structure molecular organization, common patterns of enzymatic catalysis and biochemical dynamics of main metabolic pathways involving all classes of macromolecules (amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleotides, porphyrins and soon), molecular biology and genetics of informational macromolecules (proteins and nucleic acids), molecular mechanisms of heredity and genetic information realization, hormonal regulation of metabolism and common cell biological functions, as well as special physiological function biochemistry. The discipline is taught to first and second year students during two semesters.
