Know: Methods selections of samples for various purposes. The importance of laboratory preparation samples to achieve the required accuracy of data. Methods of fractionation of mineralogical samples. Methods of research of the main diagnostic properties of minerals without the use of additional diagnostic tools. Techniques of applying the luminescent method to clarify the species affiliation of individual minerals. Methods of applying microchemical methods to clarify the species affiliation of individual minerals. Techniques of using instrumental methods to clarify the species affiliation of individual minerals. Methods of quantitative mineralogical analysis. Be able: Choose a scheme for preparing samples for mineralogical study. Perform quantitative mineralogical analysis of samples. To decide on the necessity of using additional (microchemical, immersion, instrumental) methods of diagnosis of individual minerals.

Course content
The educational discipline "Optical methods of mineral substance research" includes consideration of the possibilities of optical methods for studying the substance composition, including: characteristics of the equipment used today; methods of preparing samples for mineralogical study; methods of conducting quantitative mineralogical analysis oа samples; examples of solving specific practical problems. Tasks: acquisition by students of theoretical knowledge and practical skills: selection samples, initial preparation of samples for mineralogical study, research of the main diagnostic properties of minerals, application of additional diagnostic methods for the diagnosis of minerals, selection of monomineral fractions; quantitative mineralogical analysis. The goal of the discipline is to acquaint students with a minimally sufficient set of methods and techniques for optical research of mineral matter to solve a wide range of professional problems.

Lectures, laboratory work, consultations, independent student work
Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment: 1) Test work: max – 25, min – 15 points. The final assessment may include the results of surveys. 2) Control determination of minerals with selection and use of additional diagnostic tools: max – 25, min – 15 points. The final assessment may include the results of the current survey. 3) Independent performance of the quantitative mineralogical analysis of the study sample is evaluated in the sum: max – 30, min – 18 points. Final assessment in the form of credit (in the form of defense of the report on the performance of quantitative mineralogical analysis): max – 20 points, min – 12 points. The results of students' educational activities are evaluated on a 100-point scale. A student is not admitted to the final assessment if he scored less than 40 points during the semester. Credit is not mandatory, if the student refuses to participate in this evaluation form, the student will not receive the corresponding points for the final evaluation.
