Know: The device of a polarizing microscope and the ability to prepare it for work General knowledge of crystal optics Theoretical foundations of the passage of light throughout the crystal Methods of determining the crystal-optical characteristics of minerals in thin sections Be able: Describe and identify minerals n thin sections Describe and define the name of an igneous rock Describe and define the name of a metamorphic rock Describe and define the name of a sedimentary rock Determine the composition and features of the structure of rocks Be able to determine the microstructure of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks Genetic conclusions can be made based on the results of studies of minerals in thin sections and micro-structural features of the rocks
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Successful completion of the "Fundamentals of petrography" course 2. Knowledge of the main rock-forming minerals and their physical properties
Course content
The discipline introduces the theoretical foundations of crystal optics. Students get acquainted with the structure of a polarizing microscope. The principles of working with a microscope to study the crystal-optical properties of minerals are studied. The acquisition of knowledge on general issues of the theory of light, the behavior of light when it passes through the crystal lattice of minerals with different degrees of optical anisotropy, which is the practical basis for diagnosing igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, is ensured. The aim of the discipline is to acquaint students with the theoretical foundations of crystal optics and the practical use of a polarizing microscope for the study of rocks. Development of students' skills in microscopic diagnosis and petrographic description of rocks.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures, laboratory classes, consultations, independent student work
Assessment methods and criteria
1. Semester evaluation (discipline calculated for two semesters): 5 Semester 1) Assessment for the performance of laboratory work – 20 points (marginal assessment 12 points) 2) Modular control work – 10 points (marginal assessment 6 points) 6 Semester 1) Assessment for the performance of laboratory work – 20 points (marginal assessment 12 points) 2) Modular control work – 10 points (marginal assessment 6 points) 2. Final assessment in the form of an exam: maximum assessment 40 points, cut-off assessment 24 points. During the exam, the student performs written work. The results of the students' educational activities are evaluated on a 100-point scale. A student is not admitted to the final assessment in the form of an exam if he scored less than 20 points during the semester.
