Course content
The academic discipline “Contemporary Concepts of Urban Development” outlines the impact of globalization processes on urban functioning and explores potential trends in city development within this context, as well as analyses the pressing issues that exist in the urban environment. It examines urban development tendencies under the conditions of the global neoliberal political-economic doctrine. Key components of the course include the study of urban policy foundations, basics of landscape planning and strategic environmental assessment of spatial plans, urban marketing, and place branding. To identify best practices in urban development, the course gives special attention to the conditions, principles, and tools of European Union urban policy. The analysis of contemporary concepts such as New Urbanism, sustainable and integrated urban development, creative cities, smart cities, and green cities enables students to understand the directions of balanced and socially-oriented urban development — characterized by high levels of resilience, quality urban environments, ecological safety, and social protection.
