Know: The essence, content and tasks of spatial analysis as a tool for solving theoretical and practical problems of spatial and strategic planning of urban development; The specifics of implementing spatial analysis of urbanized territories and urban systems; Characteristics of urban space, main types of placement models, methodological foundations of analyzing the internal organization of urban space and the external zone of influence of the city
Be able to: Calculate the force of interaction of geographical objects, determine the potential of their influence on the surrounding area, determine the areas of predominant influence of geographical objects using gravitational models and field theory methods; Apply methods of spatial statistics to analyze spatial relationships of objects, their distribution over the territory, density, spatial (auto)correlation, spatio-temporal trends in the development of socio-economic phenomena and processes in urban studies, etc.
Form of study
Distance form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
1) successful completion of the courses "Introduction to Urban Studies", "Methods of Urban Research", "Geography of Population and Settlement", "Urban Transport and Communications";
2) possession of basic skills in general scientific methods, cartographic modeling, system-structural analysis, ability to perform simple mathematical calculations;
3) possession of the tools of computer programs of the MS Office package (in particular, MS Word, MS Excel), software for using the Internet, online cartographic services (Google Maps).
Course content
The basics of scientific ideas about the essence of spatial analysis, its tasks and methods are presented. The specifics of the application of spatial analysis methods in urban research are revealed, in particular when studying urban space, individual urbanized territories, as well as urban systems (regional urban settlement systems, urban agglomerations). The course involves familiarizing students with the principles of applying spatial analysis methods when solving theoretical and applied problems of varying complexity, detailing the conditions and rules for the correct application of individual methods or a set of methods, the algorithm of actions and the features of interpreting the results obtained. One of the most important goals of the course is to develop in students the skills to independently choose one or another research method depending on the nature and properties of the object and the research tasks set.

Assessment methods and criteria
The course includes three content parts. Classes are held in the form of lectures and practical classes. The discipline ends with an exam.
Semester assessment: the number of points that a student receives during the semester is the sum of the points that were received when evaluating the completed practical work, performing thematic tests, and defending the course work.
Assessment organization: Practical work is defended upon completion, in accordance with the schedule of practical classes. Thematic tests are conducted in a test form. Students who received less than the minimum number of points for the thematic test retake it. Preparation and defense of course works are carried out in accordance with the "Requirements for writing and defending course works at the Department of Economic and Social Geography, Faculty of Geography, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv".
