Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to provide students with basic knowledge of the theory of cartography as a component of cartography, taking into account modern approaches to understanding the peculiarities of the formation of a cartographic image and its properties; familiarization with the information base of map filling, achievements of computer technologies, which open up new possibilities in the creation and application of cartographic works.
The discipline is devoted to the theory of cartography, the study and development of methods and technologies of laboratory map creation, the theory of cartographic projections, issues of scientific and technical editing of cartographic works. Considers the theoretical foundations, subject, methods and technology of creation and application of cartographic works.
The discipline is closely related to the following cartographic disciplines: cartographic theory, mathematical cartography, geodesy, topography, photogrammetry and land surveying, digital cartography and geoinformatics, cartographic design and map publishing technology.
It reveals the subject and method of cartography, the structure of cartography and the properties of the map as a model of the real world, the classification of cartographic works, the elements of maps. Reveals the issue of the mathematical basis of cartographic works, including scales, cartographic projections, distortion of the cartographic image, classifications of cartographic projections and their main properties, projections for world territories, hemispheres, continents, oceans, and states.

Assessment methods and criteria
Forms and organization of assessment:
-- current (semester) assessment (practical papers (minimum grade 24, maximum 40; control papers (6-10); independent work (5-10));
– final (final) assessment in the form of an exam (assessment for theoretical knowledge (minimum 12, maximum 20 points); assessment for the practical part (13-20).
For students who scored a total of less points than the critical calculation minimum - 35 points, for admission to the final control form, it is necessary to pass an additionally completed individual complex task.
