Learning outcomes
Have knowledge of information genres in the print media, radio and television. Have an understanding of the functioning of editorial office. Differentiate between the functions of the creative and technical parts of the editorial team. Understand the specifics of the thematic focus of a periodical/radio or television company. Know the basic principles of layout design of a print issue and formatting of television and radio programmes. Be able to select facts, search for information, analyse the data obtained in the context of the relevant topic and relevant media (print and electronic), apply theoretical knowledge in practice. Be able to prepare journalistic materials of various information genres for print and electronic media, and work on fixing language rules. Demonstrate the results of their work: planning, preparation of publications, proofreading, and editing. Autonomy and responsibility. Critically analyse tasks and goals, explain ways to achieve them and create work plans.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
While mastering the subject, the student is expected to have certain skills, in particular: - be ready to perceive theoretical and practical information of media content; - be familiar with the basic requirements for preparing a journalistic material in the print media, on the radio or television; - create a simple informational material; - have the skills to collect and process information; - have the skills of literary text processing and editing; - have the skills of layout of newspaper/magazine pages, and media design; - be familiar with the organisation of editorial work and the ways of distributing periodicals.
Course content
The purpose of the course: to provide comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of the specifics of professional journalism within the framework of mastering the journalistic profession, learn how to choose topics of information materials and create them, enable students to gain practical skills in the information genres of print and electronic media; shape an understanding of the processes of creation and functioning and in the information market of modern newspapers, magazines, television and radio products; organise the work of editorial team; get acquainted with the specific features of editorial marketing and economic aspect of media activity. The discipline is a part of the educational and professional programme for the Bachelor's degree in Journalism. The course is taught in the first and second semesters of the first year in the amount of 390 hours (13 ECTS credits). During the first semester – 90 hours (3 ECTS credits), including: 2 ECTS credits at the Department of Periodicals and 1 ECTS credit at the Department of Language and Stylistics. The course comprises 14 hours of lectures (l), 30 practical hours (ph) and 46 hours of independent work (iw). The form of assessment is an exam. During the second semester, the course comprises 300 hours (10 ECTS credits), including: 3 ECTS credits at the Department of Television and Radio (10 l), 34 ph, 46 hours (iw); form of control – exam); 2 ECTS credits at the Department of Language and Stylistics (24 hours of practical work, 36 hours of iw); 2 ECTS credits at the Department of Multimedia Technologies and Media Design (36 hours of pw, 24 hours of iw; form of control – exam); 1 ECTS credit at the Department of Periodicals (14 hours of pw, 16 hours of iw); 1 ECTS credit at the Department of Publishing (2 hours of lectures, 14 hours of pw, 14 hours of iw); 1 ECTS credit at the Department of Advertising and Public Relations (2 hours of lectures, 14 hours of pw, 14 hours of iw).

Assessment methods and criteria
Knowledge monitoring is carried out according to the ECTS system, which involves a two-level assessment of the material learned, in particular, the assessment of theoretical training – learning outcomes (knowledge), which accounts for 40 per cent of the total score, and the assessment of practical training – learning outcomes (skills, communication, autonomy and responsibility), which accounts for 60 per cent of the total score. During the semester, 50 per cent of the points are reserved for classroom training (practical classes: oral questioning, completion of classroom assignments – written or oral) and 50 per cent for independent work in the form of creating an information product – a text of the relevant information genre – a total of at least 20 points (36 points is recommended), with a maximum of 60 points. During the final exam (in written form), a student can receive a maximum of 40 points and a minimum of 24 points.
