Course content
This course is conceived as an introduction to the painting, architecture, sculpture, and
minor arts of the period c.250-1500 AD in Europe, commonly referred to as the Middle Ages, and to
basic art-historical analytical skills, with a particular emphasis on stylistic analysis and the history
and development of style in all media. Iconographical content, particularly the subject matter of
Christian art secular material, is included, as are questions of patronage and artistic production
throughout the period. During the course, students are encouraged to undertake stylistic,
iconographical, and iconological analysis of the artworks of their choice and to draw the parallels
between the development of arts and architecture in different countries of Western, Central and
Eastern Europe.
