Course content
The course is devoted to the art and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. Through the
lens of art history, the course will take a critical look at the social and cultural development of the
Greek and Roman civilization. Providing general knowledge on the artistic and architectural
traditions in Antiquity, the course focuses on such issues as representations of identities in art, the
role of art objects in everyday life of the Greeks and Romans, intercultural contacts, the influence of
religion and ideology on art, evolution of tastes and aesthetic concepts. We will examine how the
political powers used the arts and architecture to control the population in the center of the Greek
and Roman world as well as in its periphery. The following topics are discussed during the lectures
and seminar classes: Cycladic and Aegean art and architecture, Greek art and architecture of Archaic
and Classical periods, Hellenistic art and architecture, Etruscan and Early Roman art, Imperial
Roman art and architecture from Iulii-Claudii to the late Antiquity.
