To know: - Ukrainian folklore as a phenomenon. Theories of the subject field of folklore. - Folklore as a cultural and semiotic system. Signs as carriers of the semantics of folklore text. Text as a semiosphere of folklore existence. - Subjectivity and ethnosubjectivity in folklore. - Narrative as a category and function of the folklore text. Be able to: - Interpret Ukrainian folklore as a functional and figurative system based on textual and visual sources. - Identify the specifics of "ethnic subjectivity" as a "generator" of meta-language in the modelling of a folklore text. - Explain the folklore text as a complex unified system of signs. - Analyse the semantics and pragmatics of traditional meanings in Ukrainian folklore. Communication: - Use English-language international scientific terminology. Autonomy and responsibility: - To demonstrate a high professional level and integrity in the process of studying and cultivating Ukrainian folklore heritage.

Before taking this course, students should know the main stages and results of the Ukrainian historical and cultural process; the main stages and main achievements of the study of the history of Ukrainian folklore in Ukraine and abroad, classical and modern cultural theories and research methods, basic cultural concepts and categories. To be able to acquire, evaluate and interpret information on the scientific study of Ukrainian ethnic culture, in particular folklore, to distinguish between the genres of Ukrainian folklore and to have an idea of their traditional models from the prehistoric to the postmodern era. Possess basic skills of scientific research and information management in order to study the history and theory of Ukrainian folklore in the light of classical and modern achievements of folklore studies, linguistics, semiotics, philosophy, cultural anthropology and cultural studies with the involvement of foreign language professional sources of cultural sciences.

Part 1: Ukrainian folklore as a cultural phenomenon: achievements of philosophical understanding of its development from antiquity to the present Topic 1: The origins of Ukrainian folklore and the main stages and achievements of its research. Theme 2. The scope of the concepts of "folklore" and "folk art": the variety of their interpretations in classical and modern humanities. Topic 3. Specificity and features of Ukrainian folklore: at the intersection of the main interpretations in folklore and cultural studies Topic 4. Folklore and mass culture: the experience of Ukrainian modernity and postmodernity and the main versions of its philosophical analysis. Topic 5. Contemporary Ukrainian folklore and its future in the globalised world: the crisis of the foundations of traditional ethno-cultural values Topic 6. The problem of semantics and pragmatics of traditional meanings of Ukrainian folklore: to the problem statement Part 2. Ukrainian folklore as a subject-figurative system: semantics and pragmatics of its traditional meanings Topic 7. Folklore as a functional and figurative system. Folklore text and narrative as its function and semiosis. Topic 8: Phenomenal and subjective essence of Ukrainian folklore from the point of view of the systemic-categorical approach Topic 9: Aspects of the semiotic level of folklore: sign as a unity of signifier and signified and text as a semiosphere of meaning. Topic 10. Folklore text as an integral sign constructed by mythological consciousness and embodying the folklore model of reality Topic 11: Traditionality and transmission in Ukrainian folklore Topic 12: Folklore consciousness, mythopoetics of the folklore image. Archaic mythopoetic model of the Slavic world.

Lecture, seminar, self-study

The final grade in the course (minimum 60, maximum 100 points) consists of the sum of the number of points for the semester work (minimum 36, maximum 60 points) and examination work (minimum 24, maximum 40 points). Assessment of semester work: 1. Self-study (presentation) -10 / 15 points 2. Self-study (text summary) - 4 / 10 points 3. Self-study - (written research work) - 12 / 20 points 4. Self-study - (essay) - 10 / 15 points 5. Control work - 12 / 20 points The total grade during the study period consists of the points obtained for four types of self-study: presentation, summary of primary sources, written research paper and writing of the text of recommendations. All these types of work for the semester have - a maximum of 60 points - a minimum of 36 points
