PLO 7. To analyze, to compare and to classify different trends and schools in linguistics. PLO 9. To characterize the theoretical background (concepts, categories, principles, basic concepts, etc.) and applied aspects of the chosen philological specialization. PLO 11. To carry out a scientific analysis of language, speech and literary material, to interpret and to structurize it taking into account appropriate methodological principles, to formulate generalizations based on independently processed data. PLO 15. To сhoose optimal research approaches and methods for the analysis of specific linguistic or literary material. PLO 16. To use specialized conceptual knowledge of certain philological field to solve complex tasks and problems that requires knowledge updating and integrating, often in conditions of incomplete/insufficient information and conflicting requirements.

Full-time form

Students should have a sufficient level of linguistic and philological competence within the course of study in the first cycle of higher education (Bachelors degree); know the structure of linguistics and its theoretical foundations; master the basic linguistic concepts and categories, theoretical statements and approaches of linguistics; be aware of the history of formation and development of linguistic science; use linguistic terminology fluently and have the skills to analyze speech and language material.

Objectives of the discipline – to generalize, systematize, expand and give the students an idea of the modern content of knowledge in the history and theory of linguistics, methods of research of language as an object of linguistic science, which they acquired during the Bachelors and Masters degree. Annotation of the discipline. The discipline General Linguistics is aimed at acquainting students with the main trends in linguistics, approaches, methods and epistemes that have developed within the three main paradigms in linguistics: comparative-historical, structural-systemic and anthropological. The discipline refers not only to the theoretical and categorical apparatus, developed within the framework of various theories and concepts of linguistics, but also to the formation of students practical skills in analyzing language and speech material, using methods from different paradigms of linguistic knowledge.

Lectures, independent work, video materials, video presentations (Microsoft PowerPoint). Forms of studies: Written surveys, essays, reviews, written analysis of academic literature, preparing presentation, open-ended questions.

The scores for the semester comprise the points for the mastering of the materials for the entire course. The total score for the semester consists of the points for the classwork (written tests, written analysis of the academic resources, open-ended questions) and for independent work (writing essays, preparing presentations). All types of activities for the semester are estimated as follows: 60 points maximum, 36 points minimum. Final assessment: exam (40 points maximum, 24 points minimum); The following learning results are estimated during the exam: LR 1.1-1.8; LR 2.1-2.6; LR 4.2; LR 4.3; exam consists of two open-ended questions, 20 points for each one.
