Learning outcomes
PLO 2. To be confident using state language as well as English and classical languages for written and oral communication, in situations of professional and scientific communication, inter alia; to present research results in state, English and classical languages. PLO 8. To evaluate the historical heritage and the latest achievements in literary studies PLO 10. To сollect and to systematize linguistic, literary, folklore facts, to interpret and to translate texts of various styles and genres in classical and English languages. PLO 15. To сhoose optimal research approaches and methods for the analysis of specific linguistic or literary material.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1) successful mastering of the systemic knowledge on the normative grammar of the ancient Greek and Latin languages, the history of classical languages (Bachelors degree); 2) knowledge of general information about the historical and cultural context of ancient and Christian literature; 3) skills and abilities to translate from classical languages, analysis and interpretation of literary texts.
Course content
Objectives of the discipline – deep studying of the historical genesis of Christian thought, embodied in the Bible and patristic literature, written in latin and Greek; translation, analysis and interpretation of early Christian texts in Greek and Latin; getting familiar with theological hermeneutics and exegesis. Annotation of the discipline. The subject of the discipline is: 1) Text and language of the Old and New Testaments. The main manuscripts. History of the Bible translations. The Bible translations into ancient languages and New European languages; Ukrainian translations. The first publications of the Bible. Edition of the authentic text. 2) Eastern patristic literature. Texts of apostolic men and apologists of the II century. Texts of representatives of various theological schools (Alexandrian, Caesarean, Antiochian, Cappadocian). Works of ascetic writers and post-Nicene patristics. 3) Western patristic literature. Works of Tertullian, Ambrose of Mediolanus, Jerome of Strydon, Augustine and others.

Lectures, practical lessons, independent work and individual tasks (abstract, presentation).
Assessment methods and criteria
Final assessment:credit test. The scores for the semester comprise the points for the mastering of the materials for the entire course. The total score for the semester consists of the points for the classwork (oral answers, expanded answers, participation in discussions on lectures and seminars, open-ended questions), independent work ( writing abstracts, preparing presentations,) and final test. All types of activities for the semester are estimated as follows: ● 100 points maximum, ● 60 points minimum. Final test: LR 1.1-1.4; LR 2.2, 2.3; LR 4.1-4.5 – 12/20 points.
