Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites and performance requirements To successfully master the course content, students must have prior knowledge of English for intercultural communication/ English for natural sciences-related purposes, the Ukrainian language, fundamentals of linguistics, terminology of linguistics, and pedagogy. Students must also be proficient in English at level B2 and higher, know basic categories of linguistics and its terminology, and know the system of the Ukrainian language.
Course content
Course Description The course explores the theoretical aspects of English and, specifically, in contrast with Ukrainian. It also focuses on the analysis of language aspects from the perspective of contrasting and transformational methodologies. The course is composed of two modules. The first one is dedicated to phonological and lexical aspects of English and their comparison with similar aspects of Ukrainian. Module 2 focuses on English grammar/syntax and stylistics exploring typological features of the two languages. The course is provided in Term 8 covering four ECTS credits. The course ends with an exam.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course is delivered in English. It combines such forms of delivery as lectures, practical sessions, independent work, and project work. The major activities the students are engaged in and further assessed involve classroom discussion, a team/individual project, and a module (mid-term) test paper. For the performance of the listed activities, a student can earn a maximum of 60 and a minimum of 36 points. A detailed description of the assessment criteria of the coursework is given in the course curriculum made public on the website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment The summative assessment for the course is an exam. The term’s final score is made up of the scores for classroom performance (max.20 points, min. 12 points), project work (max.20, min. 12 points), and module tests (max.20 points, min. 12 points). The maximum that one can earn for coursework during a term is 60 points. The maximum that can be earned during the exam is 40 points; the minimum (a passing grade) to be added to those earned in the term is 24 points, (i.e., 60% of the 40 points allotted to the exam). The exam is administered in writing. An exam card includes four tasks: questions 1 and 2 concern the theory of English, and questions 3-4 are from the domain of contrastive typology. Each question is worth 10 points.
