Learning outcomes
Programme Learning Outcomes PLO 23. Apply modern approaches, technologies, methods, techniques, and tools for teaching a foreign language in basic secondary school. PLO 24. Adhere to modern norms in a foreign language, have a C1 FL proficiency, use different forms and types of communication in educational activities, and opt for language tools in accordance with the style and type of a text. Prerequisites and co-requisites
The successful performance in the exam builds on students’ knowledge of modern approaches to teaching a foreign language (FL) based on the best Ukrainian and international practices, effective methods of teaching; methods of testing and assessing learners’ outcomes in FL; the major functions of language as a social phenomenon, features of language use in particular contexts; the state standard of secondary education, FL curricula for secondary educational establishments and pathways of their implementation in a variety of instructional and extra-curricular activities; ability to organize FL instruction in secondary educational establishments, study theoretical and teaching methods-related scholarly sources, search, process, systematize and apply up-to-date scientific information in practice, use computer technologies; have enhanced communicative competence in FL; be able to compare and contrast language phenomena; write and edit profession-oriented texts (in Ukrainian and FL).
Course content
The examination aims to test programme learning outcomes of the courses on FL, and methods of teaching FL in basic secondary school. The final examination integrates the issues studied within the above-mentioned courses aimed at the development of students’ communication skills at a level not lower than C1, as well as the capacity to solve complex profession-oriented tasks related to the organization of FL instruction and education in secondary school. The final exam is comprised of two thematic parts: 1) FL; 2) Methods of teaching FL in basic secondary school. The exam is administered in English and Ukrainian; it combines written and oral performance wherein a task done in writing is followed by presenting answers orally. The written part is allotted 120 minutes. The time allotted to a student’s oral presentation is 30 minutes.

Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment The total score for the performance during the exam is made up of the scores awarded for each of the four tasks. Task one suggests writing two types of text analysis, 1) linguo-stylistic and interpretive analysis of an original English-language text (max. 20 points), 2) linguistic analysis of text fragments (max 10 points). Task two (max. 20 points) aims to test students’ competence in oral production within the topic areas offered in the curriculum. Task three (max. 20 points) is focused on the theory of FL teaching, it aims to test the knowledge acquired through the course, and the skills to logically present the information, accurately use terminology and provide relevant and detailed examples. Task four (max. 30 points) requires developing a set of activities/tasks to teach particular aspects of FL, it aims to test students’ ability to use the acquired knowledge in practice.
