Prerequisites and co-requisites
To successfully complete the course, students are required to have prior knowledge of such courses as “Pedagogy”, “Ukrainian language”, “Age and educational psychology”, “A foreign language”, “Methods of teaching Ukrainian”, “Methods of teaching Ukrainian literature”, “Methods of teaching foreign languages”. Students are also expected to know the specific subject matter of language pedagogy as a science and its branches, particularities of pedagogical discourse, a repertoire of a foreign language teacher’s strategies and tactics; the major trends in the development of teaching literature in Ukraine and beyond, novel approaches, methods, principles, and means of teaching Ukrainian literature in secondary school; novel approaches, methods, principles, and means of teaching foreign languages; major methods, techniques, and means of teaching creative classes; major processes in the development of the theory of literature, teaching methods, pedagogy, and psychology.
Course content
Course description The course aims to equip students with knowledge of up-to-date concepts of teaching languages and literature, foundations of innovative teaching languages and literature; present ways to implement novel methods in teaching, build skills to use theoretical knowledge in practice; involve students in search and development of new methods of teaching Ukrainian language and literature; shape a students’ humanistic outlook, general culture, and aesthetic tastes; enable students to analyze up-to-date works on pedagogy and teaching methods and efficiently select materials for their future work in education. The course is comprised of two parts, each consisting of two modules. Part one examines the methodological foundations of teaching Ukrainian literature; Part two focuses on the methodological foundations of teaching Ukrainian; Part three studies the methodological foundations of teaching foreign languages. Summative assessment is a pass/fail test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course is delivered in Ukrainian and English. It combines such formats of instruction as lectures and practical sessions, independent, research and project work. The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions, participation in discussions, a creative task (talk, report, presentation), a module project, and an end-of-course test paper. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum posted on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. The total score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 100, min. 60 points). The formative assessment considers answers at practical sessions (8 points), participation in discussions (8 points), a creative task (30 points), a project (30 points), and an end-of-course test paper (24 points). Pass/fail credit is granted based on the outcomes of the coursework during the term and does not involve any additional assessment events. To succeed in the pass/fail assessment, students are required to gain a passing grade of 60; students fail if the score is below 60.
