Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites and performance requirements To be eligible for the course students are required to: have knowledge of the basics of language teaching and pedagogical discourse; major strategies employed by a foreign language teacher, methods of teaching English in secondary school; be able to design an English language course in programs, plans, textbooks; use methods, techniques in various organizational forms of training in educational institutions; develop a set of exercises and tasks for students to master various aspects of language and speech; overcome the psychological and psycholinguistic difficulties of learning English as a second language; predict zones of cross-language interference; develop outline plans and conduct lessons and extracurricular activities in English as a second language in secondary school.
Course content
Course Description: The course is targeted at building the professional competence of language pedagogy majors in organizing language instruction based on the national and global experience of specialized language teaching and learning. The course reveals theoretical, practical, and organizational aspects of teaching foreign languages in a profession-oriented school, innovative methodological theories and technologies, and represents a modern view on the development of students’ language and sociocultural competencies in students of a secondary profession-oriented school. The course comprises 2 modules. Module 1 considers the concepts of basic and profession-oriented school education and the models of profession-oriented instruction. Module 2 focuses on teaching languages and literature in a secondary profession-oriented school. The course ends with a pass/fail test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical sessions, and project-based and independent learning. Major activities performed by the students include classroom performance, individual/group projects, module tests, and an end-of-course assignment. A student can score a maximum of 100 points and a minimum of 60 points for these activities that are components of formative assessment. A detailed description of formative assessment is presented in the course description made public on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system, a pass/fail assessment score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 100, min. 60 points) and does not involve any additional assessment events. The end-of-course assessment score is the sum of points earned for the classroom performance (45 points), module tests (20 points), project (20 points), and end-of-course assignment (150 points). To succeed in the pass/fail assessment, students are required to gain a passing grade of 60; students fail if the score is below 60.
